Fork in the Road - Part 3: The Meat

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

cow farm 100% grass fed

Over this past summer, I visited our local farmers market each Saturday morning and got to know a lot of local farmers including cattle farmers. We had been in search of a local cattle farmer who raised 100% grass-fed beef that would sell a whole, half, or quarter cow. That's when we popped up on a tent at the market and met Lukens Land & Cattle. We purchased our first quarter cow at the end of this summer and have loved it.

We are the Lukens Family, and we have 5 sons, 1 daughter, 1 daughter-in-law, and a soon-to-be grandson. My husband was raised in a family that farmed and grew their own food, but I was raised living in the city. We didn’t begin farming ourselves until 2008. We had 4 children at that time and my husband’s concrete finishing company was slow with work.

We began to garden, raise chickens, goats, and pigs and eventually added a couple of bottle calves to our menagerie. I loved learning to can, feeding the animals, and the responsibility it taught our children. We got our first south poll bull in 2013 or 2014 and began our own cattle herd. We moved to a larger property with more acreage in Campobello, SC in 2016. We sold a little produce and some 1/4 and 1/2 steers here and there but mostly worked on growing our herd. We’ve learned a lot over the years and are committed to farming as naturally as possible. We enjoy rotating our cattle from pasture to pasture to prevent overgrazing our fields, and ensuring they get plenty of nutrition from 100% grass diet. Raising meat that is antibiotic, hormone, and vaccine-free is important to us! We began to sell to the public at the farmers market in Landrum during the pandemic, in July of 2020. We had no idea how our business would grow and expand as demand for our beef, pork, and eggs has grown. We were part of simple man farms CSA boxes this summer and sold at 4 farmer's markets in the upstate. We have enjoyed the relationships we’ve established with our customers and people in our community! Our farm is always open to the public and we welcome questions about the way we farm! We love to support and encourage other farmers in our area as well. You can find out more about our farm on www.Lukenslandcattle.store and @Lukenslandcattle_ on Instagram and Lukens land & cattle on Facebook.
