The Hidden Soy

When I realized how thin I had actually gotten I finally reached out for even more help. Most people don't realize that soy is in just about everything, from chewing gum, toothpaste, foods, candles, cleaning products, medicines, vitamins, and drinks, and I JUST learned that it is in an anesthetic (Propofol) medicine used to put people to sleep!! In a previous post, I shared my experience trying to grocery shop early on in these discoveries.


I met with dietician, Catherine Johnson MS, RD, who helped me dig in even deeper. Sometimes we just need to admit we need help and that's exactly what she did! She also went further and provided me a list of items that contain soy and ones that MIGHT contain soy, the words soy is hidden under, and more.

- Anything containing the word “soy” - Bean curd - Edamame - Hydrolyzed soy protein - Miso - Natto - Okara - Shoyu sauce - Soy lecithin - Soy sauce - Supro - Tamari - Teriyaki sauce - Textured vegetable protein - Tofu - Yadidof

- Artificial flavoring

- Natural flavoring - Asian foods - Hydrolyzed plant protein - Hydrolyzed vegetable protein - Vegetable broth - Vegetable gum - Vegetable starch - Some vaccines

I have successfully put my healthy weight back on, I am feeling wonderful now however, I am still learning new places soy are hidden every day! I hate that this is even a situation for me because I love soy. I love Asian food, edamame, soy sauce, teriyaki sauces, miso, etc. It is very scary how hard it is to avoid, and so confusing why it is in so many things that it doesn't need to be in. Thankfully I am not anaphylactic to soy so if I do come in contact my life isn't in jeopardy.
